About the Authors

David Lee "Tex" Hill resigned his commission as a naval aviator in 1941 to serve in China with the American Volunteer Group under Claire Chennault.  In seven months of combat following Pearl Harbor, he shot down 12 1/4 enemy aircraft and became squadron leader of the AVG's 2nd Squadron ('Panda Bears').  Upon disbandment of the AVG in 1942, he accepted a field commission to major in the Army Air Corps and commanded the newly-formed 75th Fighter Squadron.  During that combat tour and a second one as 23rd Fighter Group commander in 1943, he downed another six enemy aircraft, bringing his total to 18 1/4 victories.  As a brigadier general, he became the Texas Air National Guard's first commander.  He has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross with 4 oak leaf clusters. Tex lives in San Antonio, Texas with his wife Mazie.

Reagan E. Schaupp is "Tex" Hill's oldest grandson, a major in the United States Air Force, and an avid military history enthusiast. He is the Weapons and Tactics Flight Commander for the 50th Space Wing, stationed at Schriever AFB, Colorado.  He has published in the Air & Space Power Journal, and has written a Space Power Survey of support to Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Weapons School and a distinguished graduate of Squadron Officer School. He has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Clemson University (1991) and Master of Administrative Sciences from the University of Montana (1994).  He lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado with his wife Dawn and their children, Jonathan, Charles and Hannah.
